Program details
Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa provides a residence permit for financially independent individuals who wish to live in Spain without working. The program requires proof of stable passive income or substantial savings rather than any investment commitment. Applicants must demonstrate monthly income of EUR 2K for the main applicant plus EUR 1K for each dependent family member.
The visa grants an initial one-year residence permit, renewable for two consecutive two-year periods (1+2+2 = 5 years total). After five years of continuous legal residency, holders become eligible for permanent residency, which provides a ten-year card with enhanced benefits including access to the Spanish healthcare system. Physical presence of at least 183 days per year is required to maintain residency status and qualify for future renewal and permanent residency.
Processing typically takes between two weeks and three months through Spanish consulates abroad. The visa provides full access to the 26 Schengen countries and allows family reunification including spouse, dependent children, and parents. While work is prohibited under this visa category, it serves as a reliable pathway to long-term residency in Spain for retirees, remote workers with foreign income, and individuals with investment portfolios generating passive returns.
After ten years of continuous legal residency, holders may apply for Spanish citizenship, subject to demonstrating language proficiency in Spanish, cultural integration, and meeting tax obligations. The program remains particularly attractive for its low financial threshold compared to investment-based residency programs, straightforward requirements, and comprehensive access to European residence benefits.
