UAE Virtual Working Programme

Dubai's Virtual Working Programme lets remote workers and freelancers live in the UAE while employed by companies outside the country. Launched in 2020, the programme requires a minimum monthly income of USD 4K (approximately AED 13K ) and valid health insurance covering the UAE. There is no local sponsor or employer required.

The visa is issued for one year and can be renewed by reapplying with updated documents. Applicants must provide the following documents:

• Proof of remote employment or business ownership
• A passport valid for at least six months
• Bank statements covering the most recent six months

As of January 2026, the documentation window was extended from three to six months of income proof.

One of the programme's strongest draws is the UAE's zero personal income tax. Remote workers pay no tax on their worldwide income while residing in Dubai, making it one of the most financially attractive digital nomad destinations globally. The UAE also offers world-class infrastructure, reliable high-speed internet, and a strategic timezone between Europe and Asia.

Family members can join on dependent visas. Spouses and children under 18 are eligible for sponsorship, each requiring their own health insurance and visa application. The total cost per person, including the visa fee of AED 1K , Emirates ID, and medical examination, typically ranges from AED 3K to AED 7K depending on insurance coverage.

The programme is distinct from UAE freelance visas, which require a local trade licence and are tied to working within the country. The Virtual Working Programme is designed exclusively for those employed by or running businesses registered outside the UAE. It does not provide a pathway to permanent residency or citizenship, though holders may later transition to other visa categories such as the Golden Visa.
