Program details

Portugal's Golden Residence Permit Program (ARI) offers EU residency through investment in regulated funds or cultural donations. The real estate investment option was eliminated in October 2023.

The program features exceptionally minimal physical presence requirements: just 7 days in the first year, then 14 days per subsequent 2-year period. This makes it one of the most flexible residency programs in Europe.

A2 Portuguese language proficiency is required for naturalization. The citizenship timeline saw recent legal developments: Parliament passed a 10-year extension in October 2025, but the Constitutional Court struck down key provisions as unconstitutional on December 15, 2025. The law must return to Parliament for revision. The current 5-year pathway remains in effect pending legislative resolution.

Note: The NHR tax regime ended for new applicants in January 2024, with final transitional applications accepted until March 31, 2025. Previous beneficiaries retain their status for the full 10-year period.
