Program details

Italy introduced its Digital Nomad Visa in April 2024 through Legislative Decree 79/2024, offering highly qualified remote workers the ability to live and work in Italy while maintaining employment outside the country. The program requires applicants to demonstrate an annual income of at least EUR 28K and proof of at least six months of remote work experience. Successful applicants receive a one-year residence permit that can be renewed indefinitely at local police headquarters.

Family reunification is supported through this program. Spouses and children under 18 can accompany the primary applicant, with income requirements increasing to EUR 34K annually plus EUR 2K per child.

Family members must enter Italy simultaneously with the primary visa holder to qualify for accompanying residence permits. Freelancers and self-employed individuals may benefit from Italy's regime forfettario, which offers a flat tax rate of 5 to 15 percent on income up to EUR 85K .

The visa provides access to all 26 Schengen Area countries and establishes a clear pathway to permanent residency after five years of legal residence. To qualify for permanent residency, applicants must maintain physical presence in Italy for at least 183 days per year.

After 10 years of continuous legal residence, visa holders become eligible for Italian citizenship. This permits dual nationality and unrestricted movement throughout the European Union.
