Many investors search for Andorra citizenship by investment programs, hoping to acquire an Andorran passport quickly. The direct answer is no. Andorra does not offer a citizenship by investment program.

However, the country does provide a clear path from residency to citizenship. This article explains what Andorra actually offers and how long it takes to become an Andorran citizen.

What Andorra Actually Offers

Andorra offers passive residency by investment, not citizenship. To qualify for residency, you must invest at least EUR 600K in Andorran assets.

The investment requirements include:

  • Deposit EUR 48K with the Andorran Financial Authority as proof of solvency
  • Invest the remaining amount in real estate (minimum EUR 553K ), financial instruments with Andorran ISIN, or an Andorran company
  • Maintain an annual income of at least EUR 52K (2025 threshold)

The minimum physical presence requirement is only 90 days per year. This makes Andorra residency attractive for those who want residency in Europe without full-time relocation, though Andorra is not an EU or Schengen member state.

Important: New legislation coming into effect in 2026 will raise the minimum investment to EUR 1.0M , or EUR 800K for real estate purchases. Applications were closed on January 21, 2026 pending the new law.

The Path from Residency to Citizenship

Once you obtain Andorran residency, you can eventually apply for citizenship through naturalization. However, this is a long-term commitment that requires patience and genuine integration into Andorran society.

Standard naturalization requirements include:

  1. Maintain legal residence in Andorra for at least 20 years
  2. Spend a minimum of 183 days per year in Andorra during the naturalization period
  3. Pass tests on Catalan language, Andorran history, and geography
  4. Demonstrate active participation in the local community
  5. Renounce your current nationality (Andorra does not allow dual citizenship)

Accelerated path: If you studied in an Andorran school for at least 10 years, you can apply for citizenship after 10 years of residence instead of 20.

The no dual citizenship policy is a significant consideration. Unlike most citizenship by investment programs, becoming Andorran means giving up your existing passport. This requirement makes the decision more complex for investors who value keeping their original nationality.

Andorran Passport Strength

The Andorran passport offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 171 countries. Andorran passport holders can travel visa-free to Schengen countries, even though Andorra itself is not an EU or Schengen member.

Key benefits of Andorran citizenship:

  • Visa-free travel to Schengen countries (though Andorra is not in the EU or Schengen)
  • Favorable tax environment with territorial taxation principles
  • High quality of life in a safe, stable microstate
  • Strong banking privacy and financial services sector

However, these benefits come after two decades of residence. For investors seeking faster citizenship options, Andorra is not a practical choice.

Faster Alternatives to Andorra Citizenship

If you are specifically looking for citizenship by investment with shorter timeframes, several countries offer genuine CBI programs:

  • Caribbean programs (St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda) with citizenship in 3 to 6 months
  • Vanuatu with citizenship in 1 to 2 months
  • Turkey with citizenship after USD 400K real estate investment
  • Malta with citizenship after 1 or 3 years of residence (depending on investment amount)

European residency programs with shorter paths to citizenship include:

  • Portugal Golden Visa with citizenship eligibility after 5 years
  • Greece Golden Visa with citizenship after 7 years
  • Spain Golden Visa with citizenship after 10 years

These alternatives offer faster timelines than Andorra while still providing access to Europe and strong passport rankings.

Realistic Expectations for Andorra

Andorra residency by investment is an excellent option for those seeking low taxation, privacy, and a high quality of life in Europe. The program offers flexibility with minimal stay requirements, and residents can travel visa-free to Schengen countries.

However, it is not a citizenship by investment program. The 20-year naturalization requirement makes it one of the longest paths to citizenship in Europe. Combined with the requirement to renounce your existing nationality, Andorran citizenship is a serious long-term commitment.

If your primary goal is acquiring a second passport quickly, consider dedicated citizenship by investment programs instead. If you value Andorra's lifestyle, tax benefits, and privacy, the residency program offers those benefits immediately without needing to wait for citizenship.
