Country details
The Philippines is a large Southeast Asian archipelago with Manila as its capital. It operates a mixed income-tax framework where the treatment of foreign income depends heavily on taxpayer classification (resident citizen vs resident alien, and other categories).
Tax system snapshot:
- Personal income tax: individual income is generally taxed on progressive rates up to 35%.
- Dividends: dividends received by resident individual taxpayers from domestic corporations are commonly subject to a 10% final withholding tax.
- Capital gains: common headline rates include 6% on sales of real property treated as a capital asset, and 15% on sales of shares in a domestic corporation that are not traded on the stock exchange.
- Estate and gifts: there is no separate inheritance tax, but an estate tax is imposed (headline 6% in PwC summaries). Gift/donor taxation can also apply.
- Foreign income: resident citizens are generally taxed on worldwide income, while many categories of non-residents and aliens are taxed only on Philippine-source income. For inbound movers who are treated as resident aliens, this can function similarly to a territorial outcome for foreign-source income.
Immigration and residency: the Bureau of Immigration administers entry and visa status. For long-term residence, one of the best-known structured pathways is the Special Resident Retiree's Visa (SRRV), administered through the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) and issued by the Bureau of Immigration upon PRA endorsement.
