Country details
France is a large Western European economy with deep capital markets, high-quality infrastructure, and strong legal institutions. For individuals, it is generally a high-tax jurisdiction with significant social contributions and compliance.
Personal income tax is progressive up to 45% (before surcharges and social charges). Investment income such as dividends and many securities capital gains is commonly taxed under the Prélèvement Forfaitaire Unique (PFU) at 30% (12.8% income tax plus 17.2% social contributions), with an option in some cases to choose the progressive scale instead.
France also levies a real estate wealth tax (IFI) on net real estate assets above EUR 1.3M , and inheritance tax rates depend heavily on the relationship between the deceased and the beneficiary (up to 60% for unrelated beneficiaries). Tax residents are generally taxed on worldwide income, typically with treaty relief and credits for foreign tax.
As an EU and Schengen member, France is straightforward for EU/EEA nationals under free movement rules. Non-EU nationals typically use the France-Visas system and then local prefecture processes for residence permits. For IP-heavy businesses, France's IP Box can materially reduce corporate tax on qualifying net IP income, but it is a corporate regime rather than a personal tax residency program.
