Program details

Andorra does not offer a citizenship by investment program. Despite frequent searches for "Andorra citizenship by investment," no such pathway exists. Citizenship can only be obtained through naturalization after extended legal residency.

The standard naturalization requirement is 20 years of continuous legal residence—the longest in Europe. Applicants must also demonstrate Catalan language proficiency, pass exams on Andorran history and culture, and renounce all other nationalities.

Pathways to Andorran Citizenship

Andorra offers several naturalization pathways, each with specific residency requirements:

  • Standard Naturalization: 20 years of continuous legal residence
  • Education Path: 10 years of residence if you completed compulsory schooling in Andorra
  • Marriage to Andorran Citizen: 3 years of legal residence while married to an Andorran national
  • Descent (Grandparent): 15 years of residence if you have an Andorran grandparent who lived in the principality for at least 10 years

Language and Knowledge Requirements

All citizenship applicants must pass official exams demonstrating:

  • Catalan language proficiency (written and oral tests)
  • Knowledge of Andorran history, culture, and institutions
  • Understanding of local geography

The Catalan exam requires a minimum score of 60 out of 100 points, with at least 40 points in the verbal section and 20 points in the written section. Applicants have 5 years from submitting their citizenship application to pass these tests.

Dual Citizenship Policy

Andorra strictly forbids dual nationality. All citizenship applicants must renounce their current nationality within 5 years of obtaining Andorran citizenship. Limited exceptions exist for minors, but they must choose one nationality upon reaching adulthood.

2025 Nationality Law Reforms

In May 2025, Andorra introduced amendments to broaden citizenship access:

  • All documented periods of legal residence now count toward the 20-year requirement, even if interrupted
  • Grandchildren can now obtain citizenship through an Andorran grandparent, even if their parents never lived in Andorra
  • Enhanced integration interviews with stricter Catalan oral testing
  • Digitized renunciation procedures to reduce processing delays

Andorran Passport Benefits

The Andorran passport ranks 16th globally for travel freedom, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 171 countries and territories. This includes the United Kingdom, United States, Japan, and Brazil. While Andorra is not part of the European Union or Schengen Area, Andorran citizens can visit EU countries visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Combined with Andorra's favorable tax regime—maximum 10% income tax and no wealth, inheritance, or capital gains taxes—citizenship provides significant benefits for those willing to commit to the extended residency period.
